The Effectiveness of Using Simulation in Undergraduate Medical Students' Training in Neonatal Resuscitation.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to see how introducing neonatal resuscitation training into the Sultan Qaboos University undergraduate medical curriculum affected students' knowledge and confidence during pediatric clinical rotations. This research aims to close a knowledge gap in neonatal resuscitation among undergraduate medical students, ensuring seamless integration into the healthcare system and adherence to the highest patient safety and care standards in critical newborn scenarios.
Methods: Our hybrid curriculum incorporates online lessons, Neonatal Resuscitation Program texts, and high-fidelity simulation training. Knowledge acquisition was assessed through the utilization of multiple-choice assessments as well as pre- and post-examinations. The research focused on statistical variables, specifically the mean, median, standard deviation, and interquartile range, encompassing the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles. In addition, a psychomotor skills instrument and self-assessment questionnaires were employed to evaluate the proficiency, contentment, and self-assurance levels.
Results: After completing the course, it was observed that all 24 participants showed a significant improvement in their test performance. The mean score experienced a substantial increase, rising from 41.25 to 90.63 out of a maximum score of 100. This change was statistically significant, as indicated by a p-value of< 0.001. Furthermore, they achieved perfection in their psychomotor skills and demonstrated heightened satisfaction and confidence when dealing with neonatal emergencies.
Conclusion: Including newborn resuscitation training in undergraduate medical curricula significantly improved students' knowledge, skills, and confidence. Given the results above, integrating such training into the neonatal curriculum is paramount. This inclusion is crucial to enhance patient safety during clinical rotations and promote more cohesive teamwork among healthcare professionals.
